What 'bad credit' means to a lender
A credit score is a summary of how you have handled borrowed money in the past. It says nothing about your income today, your job, or whether a $300 payment is comfortable for you. Traditional auto lenders lean on the score because they never meet you. A Buy Here Pay Here dealership does meet you, so the score carries far less weight.
What we look at instead
- Proof of steady income
- Time on the job or with your income source
- Stable residence and a reachable phone number
- Down payment or trade-in
- Whether the payment fits your real monthly budget
Repossessions and bankruptcies
Both are common on applications we approve. A repossession from three years ago during a job loss is a different situation from a missed payment last month, and we look at the situation rather than the label. Bring the details; do not assume they disqualify you.
How to prepare before you apply
Gather your driver's license, two recent pay stubs, a utility bill in your name, and a few references with phone numbers. Decide what monthly payment you can live with — not the maximum you could scrape together in a good month. Then apply online so your approval is waiting when you arrive.
