There is no single right number
Anyone who quotes you a flat down payment before seeing the vehicle and your application is guessing. At Denison Motors, down payments start as low as $500 and rise from there based on the price of the vehicle, its mileage, and the monthly payment you are trying to hit.
What moves the number up or down
- Vehicle price — a newer, lower-mileage truck asks for more up front than an older sedan
- The payment you want — more down means a smaller payment and a shorter contract
- Your income and job history — stronger, longer income can lower what we need up front
- A trade-in — its value applies straight to your down payment
- Tax, title, and license, which we quote up front so nothing is a surprise at signing
Trade-ins count as cash
You do not have to bring the whole down payment in cash. We appraise trade-ins on the spot, running or not, and apply the value to your down payment. If you still owe on the vehicle, bring the payoff amount and we will tell you honestly whether the numbers work.
Should you put down more than the minimum?
If you can, yes. A larger down payment reduces what you finance, lowers each payment, and shortens the note. If cash is tight right now, the minimum gets you into a reliable vehicle so you can keep working — that is a legitimate choice too, and we will show you both scenarios side by side.
